Title of the set: "De Toeracos”
Authors: Herman Schlegel and G.F. Westerman
Artist: Hermann Schlegel(1804-1880)
The monograph "De Toeracos" is undoubtedly the most splendid work by Hermann Schlegel and issued by the Royal Zoological Society "Natura Artis Magistra", ranking among the finest bird books ever published. This work was published in 1860, in elephant folio (format 57 x 72 cm), describing and depicting life size all 17 bird species of Musophagidae (Banana eaters) known at the time. While dedicated to the patron of "Artis", His Majesty The King, the original edition was very limited. The books were never for sale but were especially intended as presentation tributes to members of the Royal Zoological Society in particular and zoological science in general, who deserved recognition.
Our original is rare copy and probably the finest Dutch large colour-plate book on birds. " An account of the Touracos (fam. Musophagidae). The general text, in Dutch, contains a description of each species with distribution, synonymy and other notes. The synopsis contains Latin diagnoses of the species. The plates are excellent and suggest the work of Wolf ..." Zimmer II, p. 555-6.
"The essential part of the work consists of the beautiful plates, executed in lithography coloured by hand (P.W.M. Trap excudit) from drawings by Schlegel, made from nature and as far as possible from life. The birds are figured in life-size, which accounts for the large format" (Anker 444). Turacos are medium sized arboreal birds endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, living in forests, woodland and savanna.
